In Episode 4 of “All The Things That Matter,” aired on July 8, author and theologian Brad Cummings challenged the traditional view of hell as a place of unending torment, proposing instead a radical reinterpretation rooted in Scripture’s original languages and themes of divine love. In a discussion with Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, Cummings argued that the “lake of fire” may not be a torture chamber but a refining crucible — a tool of purification rather than eternal punishment.
Cummings, co-author of “The Shack” and editor of “The Founders’ Bible,” critiqued the fear-based evangelism that dominates modern Christianity. “We’re scaring people out of hell,” he said. “If God’s going to roast you in the lake of fire, why would anyone want to hang out with Him?”
Instead, he urged a shift toward understanding judgment as restorative, citing biblical metaphors of fire as cleansing (Malachi 3:2-3) and God as a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29) that burns away corruption.
Key to his argument is the linguistic nuance of the Greek word aionios (often translated as “eternal”) and the Hebrew olam, both meaning “pertaining to an age” — a finite period. “The lake of fire belongs to an age of judgment,” Cummings explained. “It’s not infinite; it has a purpose: to separate dross from gold.”
Dr. Sherri Tenpenny raised the parable of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31), a classic text used to support eternal torment. But Cummings countered that the story’s focus is on the chasm between choices in this life, not an irreversible afterlife. “Jesus spoke in parables to reveal spiritual truths, not blueprints of geography,” he said.
He also highlighted Jesus’ cry on the cross—”Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34) — as evidence of God’s relentless mercy. “If the lake of fire flows from the throne of a God who forgives even His killers, how can its purpose be vengeance?” Cummings asked.
Both speakers critiqued the church’s historical emphasis on fear. Tenpenny recalled a childhood nightmare triggered by fire-and-brimstone sermons: “I dreamed Jesus smacked my forehead and said, ‘Go back — you’re not good enough for heaven or bad enough for hell.'” Cummings responded, “Fear restrains; only love transforms. If the goal is Christlike character, threats won’t produce it.”
He pointed to Daniel’s vision of a “river of fire” (Daniel 7:10) and Revelation’s “lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14) as symbols of divine purification. “Fire doesn’t destroy metal — it reveals it,” he said. “God’s judgment is about finishing what He started in us.”
Cummings’ most startling claim? Even the “wicked” resurrected for judgment (John 5:29) might not face endless suffering. “Why raise them just to throw them into fire forever?” he asked, suggesting the lake of fire could be a temporary, corrective process. While he stopped short of universalism, he emphasized Philippians 2:10-11 — “every knee will bow” — as proof of God’s ultimate reconciliation.
This debate isn’t just theological nitpicking; it’s a challenge to rethink God’s character. “If we see Him as a torturer,” Cummings concluded, “we’ll never trust His love.” Whether his view gains traction or sparks backlash, one thing is clear: the conversation about hell is far from over.
“The goal isn’t to avoid punishment,” Cummings said. “It’s to become someone who doesn’t need it.”
